The right kit depends on your tires, rims, riding conditions, group size, and distance from help. A short route near towns can justify a smaller backup strategy than a remote desert or mountain route where the next reliable resupply point is days away. Start with the failures that can end a ride, then add only the tools needed to address them.
The core kit: what should almost always come along
For most tubeless bikepacking trips, the foundation is a tubeless plug tool, several plugs, a way to inflate the tire, a spare tube, tire levers, a multitool, and a valve-core tool. These items cover the ordinary punctures and a surprising number of less ordinary problems without taking much room.
Carry more than one plug size if your tire setup allows it. Small plugs are useful for thorns, small cuts, and pinholes. Larger plugs or a plug tool that can stack multiple worms are better for a puncture that has torn open under low pressure. A handful of plugs is a sensible minimum for a remote trip, but the exact number depends on how isolated the route is and whether you’re riding alone. Plugs are light enough that carrying a few extras usually makes more sense than trying to predict the precise number of punctures.
Your plug tool should be usable with the tire casing and tread pattern you actually ride. Some tools are compact but difficult to push through a tough tire. Others store plugs inside the handle and make a good emergency option, but may be slower to use with cold or wet hands. Practice inserting a plug at home before relying on the tool in the dirt.
A valve-core tool earns its place because tubeless problems often involve the valve rather than the tread. You may need to remove the core to add sealant, clear dried sealant, release pressure, or use a pump head that has become difficult to attach. Choose a small metal tool or one integrated into another item, and keep it somewhere you won’t lose it in the grass.
Inflation: pump first, cartridge second
A compact hand pump is the most dependable primary inflation tool for bikepacking. It doesn’t run out after a single large puncture, and you can use it repeatedly if a tire loses air overnight or a bead needs several attempts to reseat. Select a pump that can reach the pressure your tires need without becoming impractically slow. A frame-mounted pump is generally easier to use than a tiny emergency pump, especially with high-volume tires.
CO2 cartridges can be a useful supplement, particularly when you need a fast burst of air to reseat a bead. They’re less attractive as your only inflation method on a multi-day trip. A cartridge is a one-use resource, and repeated punctures or a slow leak can consume your supply quickly. Cold weather also makes cartridges less pleasant to handle, and you still need a way to inflate the tire after the cartridge is gone.
If you carry CO2, include the correct inflator head and at least one cartridge sized for your tire volume. Store the cartridge and inflator together so they’re not separated when you need them. Treat CO2 as a speed or bead-seating tool rather than a replacement for the pump unless your route has a very specific reason for that choice.
Check the route’s inflation backup: Before leaving, confirm where you can realistically get air, sealant, or a replacement tube along the route. Remote sections, cold conditions, and long stretches between resupply points justify a larger pump or an extra cartridge even when your normal day rides don’t.
Sealant and valve supplies
Fresh sealant is useful, but carrying a full bottle is rarely the most efficient solution. If your tires hold pressure and the sealant is in good condition before departure, you may only need a small refill container for a long trip. A compact bottle or syringe can help after a large puncture has sprayed sealant out, after a tire has been unseated, or when hot and dry conditions have reduced the liquid inside the tire.
The amount you carry should match the tire volume and the distance you’ll travel before a reliable resupply. A tiny sample may be enough to top up a narrow tire, but it won’t replace a meaningful volume after a major loss. Sealant brands and formulas differ, so use a product compatible with your setup rather than assuming every liquid sealant behaves the same way.
A spare valve core is inexpensive and nearly weightless. A complete tubeless valve is more useful if you’re traveling far from shops or have valves that are old, damaged, or prone to clogging. Make sure the spare valve matches the rim depth and uses a length appropriate for your wheels. If your rims require rim tape, carrying a short strip of compatible tape can help with a small tape failure, although it won’t replace a proper retape.
The tube that saves the trip
A spare tube is the most important backup for a tubeless bikepacker, even if you expect to repair every puncture with plugs. A slash can be too large for plugs, a damaged rim can prevent the tire from sealing, or a valve can fail in a way that sealant can’t fix. A tube gives you a way to continue when the tubeless system has stopped functioning.
Choose a tube that fits your wheel diameter and tire range, and check whether it uses the correct valve type for your rims. For a very wide tire, a smaller tube may stretch into place in an emergency, but that’s a compromise rather than an ideal plan. Fold the tube carefully and protect it from abrasion inside your repair pouch.
When installing a tube into a tubeless tire, remove the tubeless valve and inspect the inside of the casing for thorns, wire, glass, or sharp objects. Leaving the cause of the puncture inside can immediately damage the tube. You don’t necessarily need to remove every trace of sealant, but wipe away large clumps so the tube sits reasonably flat.
A tube is also a reason to carry tire levers. Some tires can be removed by hand, but a tight tire and a tired rider make that assumption unreliable. Use levers designed not to damage the rim or pinch the tube, and avoid levering aggressively against carbon rims unless the manufacturer permits it.
Patches, boots, and the difference between them
Tubeless plugs repair holes in the tread from the outside. Patches repair tubes or the inside of a tire. Carrying a small tube-patch kit is worthwhile because your spare tube may develop a second puncture, or you may need to patch a tube after using it as a temporary replacement.
A tire boot handles a different problem: a cut or tear in the casing that is too large for sealant and plugs to hold. Commercial boots are compact and generally easier to position than improvised materials, but a carefully selected piece of tough fabric or purpose-made adhesive material can provide a useful backup. Put the boot inside the tire, not on the outside, and use a tube behind it if the tire can no longer maintain tubeless pressure.
The boot is a temporary structural repair, not permission to keep riding at normal speed indefinitely. Reduce your speed, avoid sharp impacts, and inspect the repair frequently. If the casing is separating, the bead is damaged, or the rim has a serious crack, continuing may be unsafe regardless of how well the tire appears to hold air.
Small tools that prevent large delays
A multitool should match the fasteners on your bike rather than merely offering the largest selection of bits. At minimum, account for the bolts used on your axles, brake rotors, derailleur, chainring, bottle or cargo mounts, and any accessories attached to the bike. Add a T25 bit if your bike uses it, and include a chain tool if your multitool doesn’t already have one.
Carry a quick link compatible with your chain, plus a way to remove a damaged chain link. A broken chain is less common than a puncture, but it can stop forward progress completely. Confirm the quick link matches the chain’s speed and construction; compatibility isn't universal.
A short length of spare brake hose or derailleur cable is unnecessary for many riders but sensible on very remote trips if your bike uses vulnerable mechanical controls. More broadly, inspect your bike before deciding whether a spare part belongs in the kit. A loose rack, unusual axle standard, or bike-specific suspension hardware can change the answer.
A few zip ties, a small roll of strong tape, and a length of lightweight cord are useful for temporary repairs to bags, fenders, racks, and loose housing. Wind a small amount of tape around a pump body or an old tire lever instead of carrying a bulky roll. These items aren't glamorous, but bikepacking failures aren’t always tire-shaped.
What to leave behind
A minimal kit shouldn’t include every tool that could theoretically be useful. Duplicate pumps, a complete bottle of sealant, multiple tire boots, a full-size wrench set, and a large assortment of spare bolts usually add weight without improving your ability to solve likely failures.
You can also leave behind tools for adjustments you can’t perform confidently. A specialized tool is only valuable if you know how to use it and if the repair is appropriate in the field. Learn the basics before the trip: plug a puncture, remove and reinstall your tire, fit the spare tube, use the chain tool, and check that your pump works with your valves.
Group riding changes the calculation. If several riders share a compatible wheel size and tire setup, one person may carry a larger pump, another extra tubes, and another more sealant. Don’t assume compatibility without checking it first. Different wheel sizes, valve lengths, tire widths, and drivetrain standards can make a group’s shared kit less useful than expected.
Pack it so you can use it
Keep the repair kit in one clearly marked, water-resistant pouch rather than distributing critical items across several bags. Put the plug tool, plugs, pump, and valve-core tool where you can reach them quickly. Store the tube and tire boot where they won’t be crushed by food or cooking equipment, and protect metal tools from wet sealant.
Before departure, inflate both tires, verify that the valves don’t leak, inspect the tread, and check that the sealant is still liquid. Take the bike on a short ride with the loaded bags. That test can reveal a pump that doesn’t fit the valve, a repair pouch that is impossible to reach, or a tire that loses pressure under the extra load.
After each trip, replace used plugs, cartridges, patches, and quick links. Dry wet tools, check the tube for abrasion, and inspect the sealant container for leaks. A minimal kit works best when it is maintained as deliberately as the bike itself: small, familiar, and ready for the failure you’re most likely to meet.
