Background noise from roads and crowded paths can swallow a soft chime, so a clearly recognizable ring and a simple thumb lever are valuable.

Quieter multiuse trails call for more restraint. You still need a way to announce yourself when sight lines are limited, but a harsh or unusually loud bell can feel out of proportion when people are enjoying a quiet path. Your speed and visibility matter too. On a broad, straight path, people may have plenty of time to notice you without much warning.
