How to Clean Dried Mud From a Mountain Bike Drivetrain

Protect the parts that move
Before cleaning, shift into a small chainring and a middle cassette sprocket if your bike allows it, remove the battery on an e-bike if appropriate, and keep water and solvent away from eyes, brake rotors, brake pads, and electrical connectors.

You don’t need a workshop full of specialty equipment. Gather a work stand if you have one, or find a stable way to support the bike with the drivetrain accessible. A collection of old towels or rags will keep loosened mud from spreading to the frame and brakes.

Start with dry mud removal
Put the bike somewhere you can make a mess without allowing dirty runoff to reach a storm drain or a sensitive floor. Letting the bike dry fully is usually helpful for the first stage. Dried mud is unpleasant, but loose dry chunks are easier to remove without creating a slurry that carries grit into every gap.
Use your fingers, a plastic tool, or a soft brush to lift the largest pieces from the chain, chainrings, cassette, derailleur cage, and jockey wheels. Work from the outside in. Don’t lever aggressively against the derailleur hanger, derailleur body, or the narrow plates of the chain. A chunk wedged between the cassette and spokes may need to be softened rather than forced.
Pay attention to where the mud has collected. Clay often forms a solid collar around jockey wheels and can pack between cassette sprockets. Mud around the chainring may hide behind the teeth, while material on the chain can transfer back onto every freshly cleaned surface when you turn the cranks.
Keep the rear wheel turning slowly by hand as you brush the cassette. Never put your fingers near a moving chain, and don’t use the motor to spin an e-bike drivetrain during cleaning. Slow manual rotation gives you control and makes it easier to see whether material is falling away or being pushed farther into a gap.
Soften stubborn clay without flooding the bike
Once the loose material is gone, use a damp brush or a cloth soaked in warm water to soften the remaining clay. Apply moisture to the dirty area rather than drenching the entire bike. A spray bottle is easier to control than a hose, especially around the bottom bracket, rear hub, derailleur pivots, and e-bike components.
Let the dampened mud sit for a few minutes, then brush it away. You may need to repeat this on thick clay. The goal is to make the mud pliable enough to lift, not to wash it through the component. If water immediately turns the area into a paste, you’re using too much or working too quickly.
For mud packed around the cassette or jockey wheels, a wet cloth wrapped around a sprocket can loosen the outside of the deposit before brushing. A plastic tire lever can help separate a soft plug from a safe, accessible gap, but don’t twist it against the spokes or use it as a pry bar on a derailleur part.
Avoid a pressure washer. High-pressure water can force abrasive grit past seals and into bearings, and it can drive dirty water toward the freehub, bottom bracket, headset, and derailleur pivots. Deal with water and degreaser residue
After brushing, wipe the drivetrain with clean, damp cloths to remove loosened grit and cleaner residue. Whether you rinse with a gentle flow depends on how dirty the bike is and how well you can control the water. For a lightly contaminated drivetrain, careful wiping is often enough. For thick clay, a controlled rinse may save time, but keep it away from hubs, bottom-bracket interfaces, and other bearing areas.
Don’t leave the bike wet. Use clean towels to dry the chain, cassette, chainrings, and derailleur cage, then let the bike air-dry in a ventilated place. Turning the cranks backward periodically helps expose different sections of the chain. Compressed air can remove water from some external areas, but avoid directing high-pressure air at seals and bearings because it can push water and grit inward.
If you cleaned the drivetrain while it was still installed on the bike, inspect nearby areas before applying lubricant. Mud can remain on the chainstay, inside the derailleur cage, under the chainring, and around the rear derailleur pulley bolts. Any remaining grit can migrate back onto the chain during the first ride.
Relubricate only after cleaning and drying
A clean, dry chain needs fresh lubricant on its rollers. Apply one small drop to each roller or to the inside run of the chain while slowly turning the cranks backward. Give the lubricant time to reach the rollers, then wipe the outside of the chain thoroughly. The outside plates don’t need to be wet; excess lubricant simply attracts more mud.

Avoid spraying lubricant broadly over the cassette, chainrings, derailleur, or frame. Don’t lubricate brake rotors, pads, or rim-braking surfaces. If any lubricant reaches a brake component, stop and clean it with the appropriate brake-cleaning method before riding; a contaminated pad may need replacement.
Check for damage hidden by the mud
Cleaning is also an inspection opportunity. Look for bent or chipped derailleur teeth, a stiff chain link, a damaged jockey wheel, a bent derailleur hanger, and chainring teeth that are badly worn or damaged. Rotate the cranks and rear wheel by hand, checking for unusual resistance, grinding, or clicking.
A drivetrain that skips after cleaning may have a worn chain, cassette, or chainring rather than leftover dirt. A chain that remains stiff at one link may have corrosion or physical damage.
