How to Find a Slow Tubeless Leak Before It Ruins a Ride

I’ll show you how to find a slow tubeless leak at the tread, valve, bead, or rim tape so you can fix the actual problem instead of replacing parts that are still working.

A slow tubeless leak is easy to dismiss until the tire feels soft halfway through a ride. The frustrating part is that the visible symptom—a tire losing pressure—doesn’t tell you where the air is escaping. The puncture may be in the tread, but it could just as easily be a leaking valve, a poorly sealed bead, or damaged rim tape.

The most efficient approach is to inspect the complete system in a consistent order. Start with the easiest places to check, use soapy water to make escaping air visible, and only remove parts when the evidence points to them. That helps you avoid replacing a tire or rim tape unnecessarily.

Start with a controlled pressure check

Inflate the tire to a moderate pressure that seats the tire securely and makes the sidewalls reasonably firm. You don’t need to use an unusually high pressure to find a leak. Before inflating, check the tire and rim manufacturer’s pressure limits, and keep your hands and face clear of the tire if the bead isn't seated evenly.

Check your inflation limits: Before testing the tire, confirm the pressure range marked on the tire and recommended for your rim and tubeless setup. If the bead is visibly uneven, damaged, or refusing to seat, stop rather than continuing to add air.

Wipe dirt and dried sealant from the tire, valve, and rim edge. A clean surface makes small bubbles easier to see, while mud or old sealant can hide the source of a leak. If the tire has lost most of its pressure, add enough air for it to hold its shape, but don’t assume the leak is fixed simply because the tire stays inflated for a few minutes.

Leave the inflated bike for a short period and check the pressure again. A tire that drops noticeably while parked has an active leak. If it loses pressure only after riding, inspect for a small tread puncture that opens when the tire flexes, or for a seal that is being disturbed by impacts and cornering.

Inspect the tread first

Rotate the wheel slowly and look across the entire tread and both shoulders. Search for thorns, glass, wire, small stones, and dark wet spots where sealant may be escaping. A puncture can be too small to see as a hole, so look for a tiny trail or bead of sealant rather than relying only on visual damage.

If you find a suspect spot, mark it with a removable marker or a small piece of tape. Hold the wheel so that the puncture is near the bottom, allowing sealant to pool against it. Gently rotate and shake the wheel to distribute sealant inside the tire, then wait a few minutes. Many small punctures seal when the tire is moving, but a puncture that repeatedly reopens may need a tubeless plug.

Avoid pulling out an embedded thorn or piece of glass immediately. The object may be helping to limit the size of the hole, and removing it can turn a manageable leak into a larger one. First confirm that it is the source, then decide whether the hole is suitable for sealant or requires a plug.

If no puncture is visible, apply a little soapy water to the tread and sidewalls. A slow stream of small bubbles identifies the leak more reliably than listening for air, especially when the tire is still mounted on the bike.

Check the valve and valve hole

A leaking valve is a common cause of a tire that appears to have no tread puncture. Spray or brush soapy water around the valve core, the valve stem, and the point where the stem passes through the rim. Watch for bubbles forming at one specific location.

If bubbles appear around the valve core, use a valve-core tool to snug it gently. Don’t force it; the small core can be damaged or overtightened. If the core is loose, tightening it may solve the problem. If air still escapes, replace the core with a compatible tubeless valve core rather than continuing to tighten it.

Bubbles at the base of the valve usually indicate a problem with the valve’s rubber seal, the rim hole, or how the valve nut is tightened. Deflate the tire before adjusting the nut. The rubber seal should sit flat against the rim, and the nut should be snug by hand. Excessive tightening can deform the seal or make future removal unnecessarily difficult.

A valve that spins, sits at an angle, or has sealant collecting around its base deserves closer inspection. Remove the tire only after confirming that the leak is there, then check for a damaged seal, a sharp edge around the rim hole, or rim tape that has shifted near the valve opening.

Test the bead and sidewall

The bead is the tire’s seating edge, where it seals against the rim. A small leak here can be caused by dirt, dried sealant, a damaged tire bead, an incompatible tire-and-rim combination, or a section that never seated evenly.

Apply soapy water around both bead lines, on both sides of the wheel. Rotate the wheel slowly and watch for bubbles that appear along the rim edge. Pay particular attention to areas near recent puncture repairs, places where the tire was removed, and sections that look lower or farther from the rim than the rest of the bead.

If the leak is at the bead, deflate the tire and inspect the contact surfaces. Clean away grit and flakes of old sealant, then check the rim and tire for cuts, dents, or a visibly damaged bead. Reinflate using a method that delivers enough airflow to seat the tire evenly, while staying within the marked pressure limits.

The molded line around the tire sidewall is useful here. On a properly seated tire, that line should sit at a similar distance from the rim all the way around. A wavy or uneven line suggests that the bead isn't seated correctly, even if part of the tire looks secure.

Don’t ride a tire that has a bead lifting away from the rim, a sidewall cut that exposes casing, or a bead that repeatedly unseats. Those are structural or fit problems, not ordinary slow leaks that sealant can reliably solve.

Inspect the rim tape from the inside

If the tread, valve, and bead all pass the soapy-water test, the rim tape becomes the leading suspect. Rim tape seals the spoke holes and other openings in the rim bed. A small wrinkle, lifted edge, puncture, or gap around the valve hole can allow air to leak into the rim or through a spoke hole.

Evidence of a rim-tape leak can include sealant appearing around spoke holes, a hissing sound from the rim, bubbles forming at the valve opening, or a tire that loses air even though the tire and valve test clean. You may also see sealant running out near a spoke nipple after removing the tire.

To inspect the tape, fully deflate the tire and remove one bead or the whole tire, depending on how much access you need. Look for creases, torn sections, exposed spoke holes, edges that have lifted, and cuts made during tire removal. Check the area around the valve hole carefully; a rough or oversized opening can undermine an otherwise good tape job.

Rim tape that is only slightly dirty but firmly bonded may be left in place. Tape that is lifted, creased, cut, or contaminated with sealant should generally be replaced rather than patched with a random strip. Use tubeless rim tape of the correct width for the rim bed, and install it with clean, dry surfaces and consistent tension.

Decide whether sealant is the real problem

Old, dried, or insufficient sealant can make a small tread puncture behave like a slow leak. When you remove the tire, check whether liquid sealant is still present or whether it has formed a dry film and rubbery clumps. The correct amount and replacement interval depend on the tire volume, climate, riding conditions, and sealant manufacturer’s instructions.

If the tire has been stored for a long time, the sealant may have pooled away from the puncture or dried before it could seal anything. Add compatible sealant through the valve only after removing the valve core, or follow the product’s recommended method. Rotate and shake the wheel so the sealant coats the inside rather than remaining in one puddle.

Sealant isn’t a substitute for a damaged tire or failed rim tape. It can close many small tread holes, but it won’t restore a cut sidewall, a torn bead, or a tape job that is leaking along multiple spoke holes.

Confirm the repair before riding

After fixing the suspected source, inflate the tire again and repeat the soapy-water inspection. Check the exact area that leaked, then inspect the rest of the tire once more. A puncture and a valve leak can occur at the same time, particularly after a hard ride or a tire installation.

Let the wheel sit for several hours, preferably in the same orientation in which you’ll transport it. Check firmness before riding and, when practical, use a pressure gauge for a more meaningful comparison than squeezing the tire. A small overnight pressure change can result from temperature variation, so compare readings under similar conditions.

If the leak returns after a proper valve adjustment, fresh sealant, and a clean bead, don’t keep adding air and hoping it will settle. Reinspect the tire’s casing, bead, and rim tape. Persistent leakage from the rim usually points to tape or valve installation; leakage from one tread location points toward a puncture or cut.

A slow tubeless leak is usually easier to solve when you treat it as a process of elimination. Start with the tread, test the valve, examine the bead, and then inspect the rim tape. Marking the first bubbles you see and retesting after each repair keeps the diagnosis focused—and gives you a much better chance of finding the actual fault before it turns a planned ride into an unplanned walk.
