How to Set Mountain Bike Tire Pressure When You’re New to Tubeless Tires

I’ll help you choose a sensible starting pressure for tubeless mountain bike tires, then adjust it for your weight, tire size, terrain, and rim protection needs. The goal is fewer burps, rim strikes, and wasted sealant without giving up useful grip.

Going tubeless removes the inner tube, but it doesn’t remove the need to find the right tire pressure. In fact, pressure becomes more important because the tire is now doing more work: supporting your weight, conforming to the trail, and protecting the rim from impacts.

The best starting pressure depends on more than rider weight. Tire volume, casing strength, rim width, wheel size, terrain, riding style, and whether you use inserts all matter. You don’t need a perfect number immediately, though. A sensible baseline and a few careful adjustments will get you close without buying extra parts or sacrificing a tire to experimentation.

Start with a safe baseline

Begin by checking the maximum and minimum pressure information printed on the tire sidewall and, if available, the rim manufacturer’s guidance. These limits aren't a personalized setup recommendation, but they define the boundaries you should respect. If the tire and rim specify different limits, use the more restrictive applicable limit.

For a typical adult trail bike with tubeless tires, a reasonable first test might be around 22–28 psi in the front and 24–30 psi in the rear. These are broad starting points, not universal targets. A lighter rider on high-volume tires may need less, while a heavier rider, a narrow tire, or aggressive rocky terrain may require more.

The rear tire generally needs a little more pressure because it carries more of your weight and receives harder impacts when you land or ride through square-edged obstacles. The front tire often benefits from slightly lower pressure for grip and steering control, but lowering it too far can make the tire fold during cornering or damage the rim.

Check your tire-and-rim limits first: Before your first pressure test, confirm the manufacturer’s stated pressure range and compatibility for your tire, rim, sealant, and tubeless setup. Pressure guidance can't compensate for an incompatible or improperly seated tire.

Account for rider weight and tire volume

Rider weight is best understood as total riding weight: you, your clothing, shoes, helmet, water, tools, and anything else carried on the bike. A difference of several pounds may not require a dramatic change, but a larger difference can move your starting point noticeably.

If you’re relatively light, start toward the lower end of the reasonable range. If you’re heavier, start higher, especially in the rear. This reduces the chance of rim strikes, sidewall collapse, and tire burps while you learn how your particular tires behave.

Tire volume matters just as much as the number printed on the sidewall. A 2.4-inch tire usually supports the rider differently from a 2.1-inch tire at the same pressure. A wider tire with a large air volume can often run lower pressure while remaining stable, whereas a narrower tire may need more pressure to prevent squirm and impacts.

Wheel size also changes the calculation. For the same tire width and rider, a smaller-diameter wheel can have a different tire shape and rim-impact behavior than a larger one. You don’t need to calculate a precise formula, but you should treat pressure charts and recommendations for a different wheel size as a starting reference rather than a direct answer.

Consider casing, rim width, and inserts

The tire casing affects how much support you feel at a given pressure. A light, flexible casing may feel comfortable and grippy, but it can move more during hard cornering and offer less protection against sharp impacts. A reinforced or downhill-oriented casing usually feels more supportive and can tolerate lower pressures more confidently, although it may weigh more and roll less easily.

Rim width changes the tire’s shape. A rim that is too narrow or too wide for the tire can create handling and support problems even if the pressure is correct. Check the tire maker’s recommended rim-width range rather than assuming that a wider rim always allows lower pressure.

Tire inserts can provide additional rim protection and sidewall support, but they don’t automatically make any pressure safe. Inserts differ in design, installation, and intended use. They may let you experiment with lower pressures, but you still need to watch for tire damage, rim contact, poor cornering support, and sealant compatibility.

For cost-conscious setup, use the equipment you already have before adding inserts or replacing tires. Correct pressure, a suitable tire casing, adequate sealant, and a properly taped rim solve many problems. An insert is most useful when you have identified a specific limitation—such as repeated rim strikes or tire burps—that pressure adjustments alone haven’t fixed.

Make pressure adjustments in small steps

Use a reliable digital gauge or a pump with a gauge that reads consistently. Home gauges can disagree by several psi, especially at the low pressures common on mountain bikes. Consistency matters more than laboratory precision: if you use the same gauge each time, you can learn what your numbers mean on the trail.

Set both tires before riding, and write down the pressure if you’re comparing changes. A one- or two-psi adjustment can be noticeable, particularly with high-volume tires. Changing by five or six psi at once may hide the difference between several variables and make it harder to understand what helped.

Ride a familiar trail or a repeatable section that includes the surfaces you care about: smooth hardpack, loose corners, roots, rocks, climbs, and descents. Keep your riding reasonably similar between tests. If you change tires, weather, trail conditions, and pressure at the same time, your conclusions will be unreliable.

Adjust the front and rear independently. If the front wheel feels harsh or lacks grip while the rear feels stable, reduce the front pressure slightly rather than lowering both. If the rear tire bottoms out on rocks or feels vague under power, add a little to the rear while leaving the front alone.

Recognize signs of pressure that’s too low

Low pressure can feel excellent at first because the tire conforms to the ground and produces more apparent grip. The problems usually appear when the trail becomes rough or the riding gets faster.

Common warning signs include a sharp rim strike, a dented rim, a tire that folds during a hard turn, or a burp where air and sealant escape from the bead. You may also hear the tire repeatedly slap the rim over rocks. On a tubeless tire, a small pressure loss can turn a manageable setup into an unstable one during the same ride.

A tire that feels vague or delayed when you steer may also need more pressure. This is especially noticeable in fast berms, off-camber sections, and technical traverses. Don’t assume that more grip always means better control; a tire that rolls onto its sidewall can give up control suddenly.

Raise pressure by one or two psi and test again. If you’re getting repeated rim impacts or burps, increase pressure more decisively and inspect the tire, rim, bead, and sealant afterward. Continued problems may indicate an unsuitable casing, rim width, tire size, or installation issue rather than simply an incorrect pressure.

Recognize signs of pressure that’s too high

Excessive pressure reduces the tire’s ability to conform to roots and rocks. The bike may feel skittish, harsh, or noisy, and the tires can lose traction on loose climbs and slippery corners. A tire that bounces over rough ground may have less usable grip even though it feels protected from impacts.

High pressure can also make braking less controlled on rough descents. Instead of staying connected to the ground, the tire skips across bumps. If both tires feel harsh and the trail is relatively smooth, try reducing pressure in small steps.

Don’t chase comfort by dropping pressure indefinitely. If the tire starts to squirm, fold, burp, or strike the rim, you’ve gone too far for that combination of rider, equipment, and terrain. The best setup is a compromise between grip, support, rolling feel, and protection.

Tubeless-specific checks before changing pressure

Pressure is only useful when the tubeless system is working properly. A tire that slowly loses air overnight may have a sealant shortage, a leaking valve, damaged rim tape, or a bead that isn’t fully seated. Pumping it back to the same pressure every ride can mask the underlying problem.

Check the pressure before each ride, particularly if the bike has been stored for several days. Tubeless tires commonly lose some air over time, and the rate depends on the tire, sealant, rim, temperature, and installation. If the loss is substantial or sudden, find the leak before riding demanding terrain.

Make sure the bead is evenly seated around the rim and that the valve core is tight. Inspect the tread and sidewalls for cuts, and check whether sealant is still present and able to seal small punctures. Follow the sealant maker’s maintenance guidance because formulas and recommended service intervals differ.

Carry a pump or inflator, tire plugs suitable for your tire, and a way to install a tube if a large cut or bead problem defeats the tubeless system. Tubeless reduces some punctures, but it doesn’t make a tire immune to damage.

A simple pressure-testing process

Set a conservative baseline within the tire and rim limits, with the rear slightly higher than the front. Ride a familiar loop and pay attention to grip, steering support, harshness, rim strikes, and air loss rather than relying on one feeling alone.

If the bike feels harsh and skips across small bumps, lower the relevant tire by one or two psi. If it feels vague, folds in corners, strikes the rim, or burps air, raise it by one or two psi. Test the same section again before making another change.

Record the results in your phone or a small maintenance note. Include rider and gear weight, tire model and size, wheel size, front and rear pressure, trail conditions, and what you noticed. This costs nothing and prevents you from repeating the same guesswork after a tire change or seasonal adjustment.

As you gain speed or ride rougher trails, you may need more pressure even if your body weight stays the same. Cooler temperatures can also change pressure slightly, so check it in conditions similar to those in which you’ll ride. If your preferred pressure remains so low that you frequently damage rims or burp tires, address the equipment or technique rather than continuing to remove air.

The most economical tubeless setup is usually the one you understand and can maintain. Start with manufacturer limits, use a consistent gauge, adjust in small steps, and change only one variable at a time. Once you find a pressure that gives you predictable grip without rim strikes or sidewall instability, write it down as your baseline. Recheck it whenever the tires, wheels, season, load, or terrain changes.
