Lift the affected wheel and spin it slowly. Listen for a light, regular scrape that occurs once per revolution, a continuous scrape, or a heavier drag that gets worse as the wheel turns. These patterns provide useful clues.
A once-per-revolution scrape often points to a rotor that isn’t perfectly straight. A continuous light scrape can come from caliper alignment, a wheel that is slightly off-center, or pads that are sitting too close to the rotor. A heavy drag, a wheel that stops quickly, or a rotor that becomes hot after only a short spin deserves more caution.
Look through the caliper from above or from the side, depending on the frame and fork design. The rotor should run centrally between the brake pads without visibly pushing against either pad. If you can’t see the gap clearly, use a light behind the caliper or remove the wheel only when the brake system is safe to work on. Never pull a hydraulic brake lever with the wheel removed unless you’re using the appropriate pad spacer.

Reinstall the wheel with the rotor entering the caliper slot cleanly. On a thru-axle bike, push the wheel fully into the fork or frame before tightening the axle. If the axle threads into the frame or fork, turn it by hand for the first few turns so you don’t cross-thread it. A quick-release mechanism that is too loose can allow the wheel to shift, although the correct adjustment varies with the hub and dropout design.

Replace a rotor that is cracked, deeply scored, badly warped, contaminated beyond practical cleaning, or below the minimum thickness marked by the manufacturer. The minimum thickness isn't interchangeable between rotor models, so check the marking or the component documentation. Check for side-to-side play at the hub by holding the rim and gently moving it laterally. A small amount of movement can come from a loose axle or bearing adjustment, depending on the hub design. Noticeable play should be diagnosed before you chase rotor alignment, because the rotor will move with the hub while the caliper remains fixed.
