Read the surface before you commit
Begin looking through the corner rather than directly at its entrance. You’re trying to identify where the trail changes texture, where water or tires have collected loose material, and whether the exit tightens or opens. In dry conditions, the darker or more compact-looking strip isn’t automatically grippier; it may be polished hardpack, while a lighter edge can be firm enough to support your tires. Color is a clue, not a verdict.
Look for the shape of the loose material. A thin, even dusting over hardpack often allows reasonable grip if you keep the bike relatively upright and avoid abrupt inputs.
