Start with the cause of the discomfort

A saddle that is too low or tilted down, a handlebar that is too far away, or brake levers positioned so your wrists bend sharply can all encourage this. Gripping the bars tightly in wet conditions adds another layer: you’re using more force to prevent your hands from sliding, and that sustained tension can make discomfort arrive sooner.
Before choosing a new grip, check whether you can ride with relaxed fingers and a reasonably straight wrist on ordinary terrain. Your index fingers should reach the brake levers without forcing your wrists downward or outward. If symptoms persist after changing your position, taking breaks, and reducing excessive grip pressure, seek qualified medical advice rather than assuming a different rubber compound will solve it. Persistent or worsening numbness deserves more attention than a parts upgrade.
Grip design still matters, particularly if you commute in frequent rain. However, bigger isn’t automatically better for numbness. A fine, moderately raised texture is often a sensible compromise for commuting because it provides traction without feeling like a collection of hard points beneath your palm.
