Cross Small Trail Gaps Without Pulling Too Hard

Small trail gaps and erosion channels rarely require a dramatic manual or a forceful pull on the bars. The more common mistake is reacting late: you spot the hole, stiffen your arms, and yank upward just as the front wheel reaches the edge. That can lift the front wheel too abruptly, upset your balance, and leave the rear wheel to drop into the gap without control.
For shallow gaps, the useful skill is coordinated unweighting. You approach in a neutral position, keep the bike moving at a suitable speed, and allow your body to become light over the feature. The goal isn’t to launch across every depression. It’s to reduce the load on the wheels and let the bike roll or skim through with minimal disruption.
Read the gap before you ride it
A “small gap” can mean several different things on a trail. It might be a narrow crack between slabs, a shallow drainage channel running across the trail, or a short eroded cut with a defined lip on either side. Width, depth, angle, landing surface, and approach speed all matter more than the label.
Start by identifying where the front and rear wheels will travel. A diagonal crossing changes the effective width of the gap and can make one wheel encounter the far edge before the other. That may be useful when the gap is shallow, but it can also create a sideways deflection if the edges are uneven. A square approach is usually easier to predict, provided the feature is appropriate for your skill and equipment.
Look beyond the gap as well. The landing may be loose, off-camber, wet, or blocked by a root. If you focus only on the hole, you can cross it successfully and then arrive at the next problem with your weight in the wrong place. Your line should include the entry, the gap, and the first few metres after it.
Check the feature and the trail: Before practicing, confirm that the gap is within your current ability, that the landing is clear, and that local trail rules or posted guidance allow the line you intend to use. Wet, unstable, or changing trail surfaces can make a familiar feature behave very differently.
Use neutral position as your starting point
Neutral position gives both wheels room to move without forcing either end of the bike to carry too much weight. Stand on level pedals with your cranks roughly horizontal, keep your heels slightly dropped, bend your elbows and knees, and keep your hips centered between the contact patches. Your eyes should look through the feature toward the exit rather than down at the front tire.
This position isn't rigid. Your arms and legs should act as suspension, allowing the bike to move beneath you. Keep your hands light enough that the front wheel can rise slightly if it needs to, but firm enough to maintain steering control. Avoid locking your elbows or gripping the bars as if you’re trying to hold the bike in place.
Pedal choice matters here. If you’re approaching with the cranks level, a small gap gives you time to stay balanced and absorb the transition. If the feature appears immediately after a pedal stroke, finish the stroke early and settle into a stable position rather than trying to generate a last-second burst. A poorly timed pedal can leave one crank low, reduce ground clearance, or cause you to pull on the bar for balance.
Time the unweighting to the edge
Unweighting works when it happens in relation to the feature, not simply because you’ve decided to lift. As the front wheel nears the near edge, slightly extend through your legs while keeping your arms relaxed. This reduces pressure on the front wheel and allows it to pass over the edge with less tendency to drop into the depression.
Think of making the bike light, not lifting it by the handlebars. Your center of mass rises a little as you extend, while the bike can move upward underneath you. The movement is subtle for a shallow gap. If your arms do most of the work, the front end may rise too quickly, and your weight can shift rearward farther than intended.
Once the front wheel has cleared the gap, stay loose and allow the rear wheel to follow. You may need a small second extension through your legs as the rear wheel reaches the near edge. This is often where riders make the original mistake worse: they pull hard for the front wheel, then remain extended and stiff while the rear wheel drops. Instead, let your knees and ankles absorb the bike’s movement and return toward neutral as you reach the landing.
A useful rhythm is: approach, become light, let the bike pass, then absorb. It isn’t a four-step trick performed with exaggerated motions. It’s a sequence that keeps your body from fighting the bike at each edge.
Why pulling too hard causes trouble
A forceful handlebar pull can make a small feature feel bigger than it is. It may lift the front wheel high enough to clear the gap, but the front tire then comes down with a sharper angle or lands farther forward than planned. If the landing is loose, that extra pitch can reduce your margin for steering and braking.
The pull can also move your hips behind the bike. A modest rearward shift is normal during front-wheel unweighting, but too much leaves the rear wheel heavily loaded as it enters the gap. The bike may feel as though it has been hinged in the middle: the front wheel is already across while the rear wheel drops abruptly.
Another problem is that a strong pull often comes with a strong grip. Tense hands make it harder for the front suspension and tire to track the surface. They also make small steering corrections jerky. If the gap is angled or one edge is higher, the bike needs room to move without your upper body overpowering it.
This doesn’t mean you should never use a manual-like movement. A larger or sharply defined feature may require a deliberate front-wheel lift, and advanced riders may choose to hop or preload the bike. But those are different techniques with different timing demands. For shallow gaps, a controlled unweighting is usually easier to repeat and less likely to turn a minor feature into a recovery exercise.
Adjust for speed, angle, and surface
Speed should be steady and appropriate, not necessarily fast. Too little speed can leave the front wheel dropping into the gap before it reaches the far edge. Too much speed reduces the time available to respond and increases the consequences of a poor landing. Choose a pace that carries you through without requiring a hard acceleration at the lip.
Avoid braking on the edge itself whenever possible. Braking shifts load onto the front wheel and can make the tire fall into the depression rather than skim across it. If you need to slow down, do so before the feature while the bike is settled and traveling in your chosen line. Release or greatly reduce braking as you cross, then resume control once both wheels are stable on the far side.
A perpendicular approach usually keeps the bike predictable, but a slight angle can be useful for a shallow erosion channel when the edges are uneven. The trade-off is that the wheels cross at different times, and the bike may move sideways as the second wheel reaches the far edge. Keep your shoulders and hips aligned with the intended exit instead of twisting to look at the near wheel.
Surface conditions change the technique’s margin for error. Dry, firm edges may give you a clean release, while sand, wet clay, loose rock, or polished roots can collapse or deflect under a tire. In those conditions, reduce the feature’s difficulty by choosing a better line, slowing before the approach, or walking it. Unweighting can't compensate for an edge that has no reliable grip.
Practice the timing without making the stakes high
Practice on a feature where the entry and landing are visible, the consequences of a mistake are limited, and you have room to stop afterward. A shallow, clean drainage dip or a narrow board placed flat and securely can help you feel the difference between lifting with your legs and pulling with your arms. The practice surface must be stable; a loose object on a trail isn't a suitable training feature.
Begin at a walking pace or a controlled rolling speed. Keep the cranks level, look beyond the feature, and concentrate on reducing pressure through the bars as the front wheel reaches the edge. Afterward, assess whether the bike stayed centered and whether the rear wheel crossed smoothly. Don’t judge the attempt only by whether the front wheel made it over.
You can also practice the movement on ordinary trail undulations. As the front wheel rises over a small roller, soften your hands and let your legs extend. As the rear wheel reaches the same high point, bend your knees to absorb it. This develops the timing needed for a gap without requiring you to repeatedly target a hole.
When you return to a real erosion channel, increase difficulty gradually. Start with a narrow, shallow feature and a clear runout. Only move to a wider or deeper gap when you can cross the easier one without a dramatic pull, a stalled pedal stroke, or a hard landing. Repetition should make the movement quieter, not more theatrical.
Edge cases that deserve extra caution
A gap immediately after a corner is harder because your bike may still be leaned while you need to unweight both wheels. Straighten the bike as much as the line allows and finish most of your braking before the turn. If you can’t enter the feature balanced and looking through the exit, the safer choice is to reset or walk it.
A gap on a climb may require enough momentum to prevent the front wheel from dropping, but standing too aggressively can make the rear tire spin on the far edge. Keep traction in mind and use a smooth, centered movement rather than a sudden surge. On a descent, the challenge is often controlling speed and avoiding an excessive rearward shift. Stay centered over the bottom bracket and use your legs to follow the terrain.
If the far edge is higher than the near edge, the feature behaves more like a small step-up. You may need a more deliberate front-wheel lift, but the same principle applies: initiate with body movement and coordinated pressure, not a panicked arm yank. If the far edge is lower, prioritize keeping the bike stable and absorbing the drop rather than trying to float completely across it.
When in doubt, inspect the feature on foot. A gap that looks shallow from above can hide a deeper cut, a sharp rock, or a narrow landing. There’s no technique prize for riding a line that offers poor visibility or no room to recover.
Make the next attempt quieter
For most small trail gaps, aim for a calm approach, a centered body, light hands, and an unweighting movement timed to the near edge. Let the front wheel pass without forcing it high, then allow your legs to absorb the rear wheel as it follows. If the bike lands with a slap or your arms feel loaded, review your speed and timing before adding more pull.
Practice on forgiving terrain and pay attention to the entire crossing, especially the rear wheel and the exit. As the movement becomes more automatic, you’ll have more attention available for line choice, changing surfaces, and the awkward little erosion channels that appear where a perfectly smooth trail used to be. The best result is usually uneventful: both wheels cross, your balance stays centered, and you keep riding without turning a shallow gap into a major event.
