Descend a Steep Trail With a Long Loose Exit
When a steep descent runs straight into a long patch of loose gravel or sand, your braking plan has to begin before the trail gets difficult. I’ll explain how to assess the slope, manage speed early, and carry enough traction into the exit to stay in control.
A steep trail with a loose exit creates two separate problems that arrive almost together. The upper section demands controlled speed and confident braking, while the lower section rewards light inputs because gravel or sand can disappear beneath your tires. If you wait until the surface changes to make your decisions, you may already be traveling too quickly to adjust smoothly.
The safest approach is to treat the descent as one connected feature. Read the whole line before you commit, reduce speed while you still have reliable traction, and enter the loose exit with your body position and braking strategy already set. You’re not trying to crawl down every steep trail, but you are trying to avoid making a major correction on the least predictable surface.
Read the descent before you drop in
Stop far enough back to see the slope, the transition, and as much of the exit as the terrain allows. Look for the steepest pitch, changes in grade, embedded rocks, ruts, drainage channels, and the point where firm dirt becomes loose gravel or sand. The exit may look harmless from above, but its length matters: a short patch can be crossed with a stable line, while a long one requires you to manage speed and balance for much longer.
Pay particular attention to what lies beyond the loose section. A trail that ends at a flat runout gives you more room to let the bike slow naturally. A loose exit that funnels toward a tree, rock, drop-off, switchback, or trail user deserves a more conservative entry speed. The visible surface isn’t the only hazard; the available recovery space determines how much room you have for a mistake.
Check the full runout: Before starting, identify where you can safely slow down, whether the loose surface is shallow gravel or deep sand, and what obstacles are waiting after it. If you can’t see the exit, adjust your plan as the view opens rather than assuming it will remain clear.
Choose a line that gives you options. Avoid committing to the deepest rut or the softest-looking edge simply because it appears to point straight downhill. Firm, relatively smooth ground is usually easier to manage than loose material piled against the outside of a turn. If the trail is narrow, select the line with the best combination of traction and escape space, not merely the shortest route.
Control speed before the steepest pitch
Braking works best when the tires are loaded evenly and the surface is still predictable. Use the approach to bring your speed down before the slope becomes its steepest or before the loose exit begins. This doesn’t mean locking the wheels or stopping unnecessarily. It means doing the meaningful part of your slowing while you have room to modulate both brakes and keep the bike tracking straight.
Use both brakes with smooth, progressive pressure. The front brake provides substantial stopping power, but it needs careful management as the terrain steepens and your weight shifts forward. The rear brake helps regulate speed and can give you useful feedback about available traction. If it starts to skid, ease the pressure rather than holding it locked and hoping the tire will regain grip.
On firm ground, brake in short, controlled adjustments rather than dragging both levers hard for the entire descent. Release or reduce pressure when you need the tires to roll over a rough patch, then reapply it once the bike is settled. Repeatedly grabbing the brakes can make the bike pitch forward and leave you with fewer options at the transition.
Your target speed should be one that lets you make a small correction without immediately reaching for an emergency response. If you’re already thinking, “I’ll slow down in the gravel,” you’re probably carrying more speed into the transition than the loose surface deserves. The exit should be a place to preserve control, not the first place you attempt to create it.
Set your body position for the slope
Keep your pedals level, stand on the pedals, and support your weight through your feet and hands without locking your elbows. Move your hips slightly back as the descent steepens, but don’t hang so far behind the saddle that you unweight the front tire. The front wheel still needs enough load to follow your chosen line and steer accurately.
The right position is dynamic rather than a fixed pose. If you feel the front tire becoming vague, move a little forward and reduce abrupt braking. If the rear wheel is repeatedly lifting or the bike feels as though it wants to pitch over the front, shift your hips back, lower your center of mass, and release some front-brake pressure. These are small adjustments, not dramatic movements.
Keep your head up and look toward the line you want to follow, particularly beyond the immediate front wheel. Looking only at the loose stones directly ahead tends to produce stiff steering and late reactions. Pick a path through the transition, then let your peripheral vision monitor nearby hazards while your eyes look farther down the trail.
Stay relaxed in your arms. A loose surface can move the front wheel a few inches without causing a problem, but a rigid grip can turn that movement into a sharp steering correction. Allow the bike to work beneath you while keeping your torso stable and your hands ready to make measured inputs.
Handle the transition into gravel or sand
The change from firm dirt to loose material is often more difficult than either surface by itself. Braking hard exactly at the transition can overload the front tire as it loses support. Turning sharply can create the same problem. Whenever the trail allows, enter the loose section with the bike relatively straight, a manageable speed, and your major braking already completed.
Once the tires are on the loose surface, use lighter brake inputs and avoid sudden steering. Keep the pedals level and let the bike roll rather than trying to force the front wheel through every small movement. The bike may wander slightly; that isn’t automatically a loss of control. Correct gently and give the tires time to find a path through the material.
For shallow gravel over firm ground, you can usually maintain a controlled rolling speed while keeping your weight balanced between the wheels. Deep sand behaves differently. The front wheel may plow, slow abruptly, or deflect toward a rut. If the sand is deep enough to make the front wheel unstable, a little more rearward weight can help, but avoid pulling so far back that the front tire loses all steering authority. Keep your elbows bent and make modest corrections.
Don’t automatically coast with both brakes completely open. That may be appropriate for a short, straight, predictable patch, but a long exit can still contain a turn, a rut, or an obstacle. Keep your fingers covering the levers and use gentle, intermittent pressure when you need to regulate speed. The aim is to prevent acceleration without asking the tires to do more than the surface can support.
Manage the long loose exit
A long exit rewards patience. Instead of trying to maintain one exact speed, let the bike roll where traction is good and make small adjustments as the surface changes. A tire may grip one section of gravel and slide slightly in the next. Smoothness matters more than forcing the bike to stay perfectly centered on an imaginary line.
If the loose section curves, brake before the turn while the bike is straighter, then release enough pressure to let the tires track through it. Look through the bend and keep your steering quiet. Braking heavily while leaned over on loose material can cause either wheel to slide, and the rear may swing sideways faster than you can comfortably correct.
If the bike begins to move sideways, resist the urge to make a large opposite steering input. Keep your body calm, reduce harsh braking, and steer toward open space rather than toward the obstacle you’re trying to avoid. A small correction may allow the tires to realign. If the slide grows or the trail becomes unsafe, prioritize staying upright and moving toward the safest available escape rather than preserving your original line.
A controlled exit may involve allowing the bike to slow naturally as the trail flattens. Keep scanning ahead for the moment when firm ground returns, then resume more assertive braking only once you have dependable traction. Don’t assume the first patch of hard dirt is enough; gravel often collects in the low side of the trail or continues across the entire runout.
Common mistakes that make the exit worse
The most common mistake is entering the loose section too fast because the rider is focused on surviving the steep pitch. That usually leads to heavy braking in gravel, which reduces traction when it’s needed most. The correction is to plan the exit from the top and finish most of the speed reduction before the surface changes.
Another mistake is leaning back so far that the front tire skims across the surface. This can feel protective on a steep descent, but it makes steering less precise and can allow the front wheel to deflect. Keep enough weight over the front to guide it, then adjust your hips as the grade and surface change.
Staring at the loose stones, braking with one finger in a series of panic grabs, and making abrupt handlebar movements can all amplify small disturbances. So can entering the transition while turning. Straighten the bike where possible, look ahead, and make one change at a time.
Finally, don’t let a successful first attempt convince you that the same feature will always behave identically. Dry mountain trails can change with wind, traffic, maintenance, rain followed by drying, or fresh deposits of gravel. Reassess the surface when conditions change, even if you know the descent.
A sensible progression
If the feature is unfamiliar, practice the individual skills on lower-consequence terrain. Find a moderate slope where you can rehearse braking before a loose patch, then roll through shallow gravel with relaxed arms and a straight bike. Repeat until you can reduce speed without locking either wheel or tightening your grip.
When you try the full descent, start with a slower approach and leave yourself more room than you think you need. Stop afterward and identify what happened at the transition: Did you enter too fast? Did the front wheel feel light? Did the rear skid under braking? The answer should guide one small adjustment on the next attempt, not a complete change in riding style.
Before committing, check that your tires are properly inflated for the terrain and that your brakes, controls, and wheels are functioning normally. The correct pressure depends on your tires, rims, rider weight, bike, and the severity of the terrain, so use a setting you’ve already tested rather than making a large change at the trailhead. Equipment can support good technique, but it can’t compensate for an exit entered without enough speed margin.
The safest sequence is straightforward: inspect the entire feature, choose a line with recovery space, slow down before the steepest section and transition, then keep your body balanced and your inputs smooth through the loose exit. Carry only as much speed as the runout can accommodate. On a long patch of gravel or sand, a calm bike and a little patience are usually more valuable than trying to make the descent look fast.
