Learning to Lift Both Wheels Over a Trail Obstacle Safely

Rolling around an obstacle is usually safer than lifting over it, but a small, controlled wheel lift can build useful trail skills. I’ll show you how to progress from unweighting the front wheel to clearing low obstacles without turning practice into a crash test.

A trail obstacle doesn’t need to be large to create a problem. A root, shallow log, or square-edged rock can catch a wheel, interrupt your momentum, and make you tense up. Your first response may be to yank the handlebar, jump, or aim straight at the obstacle with more speed. None of those choices gives you much control.

Learning to lift both wheels is better approached as a sequence of small skills. You’ll first learn to make the front wheel light, then bring the rear wheel through, and only afterward combine the movements over a low obstacle. The goal isn’t height. It’s keeping your body balanced, your bike predictable, and your landing quiet enough that you could repeat it.

Start with the right obstacle and surroundings

Choose a smooth, flat practice area with a gentle run-in and plenty of room to slow down. A firm grass surface can be more forgiving than pavement, but avoid tall grass that hides holes, rocks, or branches. A quiet, level trail section may work if it’s legal and doesn’t interfere with other riders. For your first attempts, use a line on the ground, a stick no thicker than a small branch, or a very low object that your tires could roll over easily.

Inspect the landing area as carefully as the obstacle itself. Remove loose debris when you can, and avoid practicing beside trees, fences, drop-offs, parked vehicles, or other hazards. You want a clear escape route if the bike moves sideways or you decide to put a foot down.

Check the practice line: Before repeating the drill, confirm that the surface is stable, the landing zone is clear, and local trail rules allow you to stop or practice there. Wear a properly fitted helmet, and use other protective equipment appropriate to the terrain and your riding ability.

Use a gear that lets you pedal smoothly without straining. A middle gear is often a reasonable starting point: too easy and you may spin without much stability; too hard and you may struggle to maintain a steady approach. Keep your suspension in its normal riding setting rather than changing several controls at once. You’re learning timing, not testing a new setup.

Build the front-wheel lift first

The front-wheel lift is sometimes called a manual lift, though a full manual is a longer, more sustained movement. For this drill, you only need to make the front wheel light and raise it a small amount.

Approach at walking pace or just above it with level pedals. Stand on the pedals, bend your elbows and knees, and keep your hips centered over the bottom bracket. Look beyond the point where the front wheel will rise rather than staring at the tire. Your index fingers should cover the brake levers, but don’t pull the front brake while trying to lift the front wheel.

As your cranks pass through a comfortable level position, push your feet forward and shift your hips slightly backward while extending your arms. Think of moving your body, not simply pulling the handlebar toward your chest. The front wheel should become light because your weight has moved rearward. If it rises only a few inches, that’s enough for the first sessions.

Immediately return your hips toward the center of the bike and let the front wheel come down gently. Don’t hold the rearward position until you feel as though you’re falling behind the bike. A small front-wheel lift that you can stop on demand is more useful than a dramatic lift that leaves you scrambling for the brake.

If the front wheel refuses to rise, common causes include approaching too fast, keeping your weight too far forward, or trying to lift with your arms alone. If it rises sharply, reduce the amount of rearward movement and keep one finger ready over the rear brake. A light tap of the rear brake can bring the front wheel down if it climbs farther than intended.

Practice this without an obstacle until you can lift and set down the front wheel while maintaining a straight line. Vary the height slightly, but don’t chase maximum height. You’re developing pressure, balance, and timing that will later connect to the rear-wheel movement.

Learn to lighten the rear wheel

The rear wheel follows a different movement. You aren’t trying to pull it upward with your feet as if the pedals were handles. Instead, you’re unloading the rear wheel by moving your weight forward and using your legs to guide the bike.

Roll slowly with level pedals and a relaxed standing position. Bend your knees, then shift your hips forward over the handlebar while allowing your arms to extend. At the same time, scoop or lift your feet slightly through the pedals. With flat pedals, this is a gentle upward-and-forward pressure rather than a hard yank. With clipless pedals, resist the temptation to pull aggressively; being attached can help with consistency but can also make a mistake more consequential.

A useful drill is to approach a line on the ground and try to make the rear tire pass over it lightly after the front tire. You may not see the wheel leave the ground at first. Listen for a softer tire contact and notice whether the bike feels less heavy at the rear. That sensation is progress.

Keep your weight forward only long enough to unload the rear wheel, then return to a centered stance. If the rear wheel skips sideways, you may be twisting your hips, lifting unevenly, or using too much force. Slow down and make the movement smaller. Rear-wheel control shouldn't require your shoulders to swing from side to side.

Combine the movements over a low object

Once the two pieces feel familiar, combine them in sequence. Approach the obstacle with level pedals, steady pressure on the bars, and your eyes focused on the landing area. As the front wheel reaches the obstacle, shift your hips slightly backward and extend your arms to lift it. After the front wheel clears, move your hips forward, lighten the rear wheel, and guide the bike over with your legs.

The timing is sequential, not one large simultaneous jump. The front wheel rises first; the rear wheel follows. Try to keep the bike moving forward rather than floating upward. You’re making room for the tires to pass over the obstacle, not trying to launch high enough to impress anyone watching from a safe distance.

Start with an object low enough that a failed attempt would amount to rolling over it. Increase the height only when you can clear it repeatedly without landing hard, drifting sideways, or needing an emergency dab. If you miss, let the bike roll through whenever possible. Avoid freezing on the bars or trying to correct a poor attempt with a sudden front-brake grab.

Your landing should be balanced over both wheels, with knees and elbows bent. Don’t deliberately land front wheel first from a height. For a small obstacle, the wheels may touch down close together, but the important part is that your body remains centered and ready to absorb the contact. Keep your pedals level until you’re stable again.

Common mistakes that make the lift less safe

Pulling the handlebar without moving your hips usually makes the front wheel rise briefly while the rider remains too far forward. The result is a cramped, ineffective lift. Practice the weight shift on the flat before adding an obstacle.

Using too much speed can make a weak technique look successful for one attempt, then turn a small error into a long slide. Use only enough momentum to keep the bike stable. If you’re uncomfortable with the approach, slow down rather than compensating with a larger lift.

Trying to clear an obstacle that is too tall encourages you to exaggerate every movement. Lower the object until you can focus on sequence and balance. A low obstacle also gives you more room to roll through if the rear wheel doesn’t come up.

Staring at the obstacle tends to pull your body and steering toward it. Look at the line you intend to take and then toward the landing zone. Your peripheral vision is sufficient for judging a small object at close range.

Braking at the wrong moment can upset the bike. Avoid the front brake during the initial lift, and don’t stab either brake while the bike is light unless you need to stop an obvious loss of control. Learn the movement at a speed where stopping remains straightforward.

Practicing until you’re exhausted is another overlooked problem. Timing deteriorates when your arms and legs are tired, and a skill that depends on balance becomes less predictable. Stop after a few quality repetitions, take a break, and return when you can stay relaxed.

Account for bike and terrain differences

A mountain bike’s geometry, wheel size, suspension, tire pressure, and cockpit setup all affect how easily it lifts. A long, slack bike may feel stable but require more deliberate body movement. A small or lightweight bike may respond quickly to modest inputs. Neither is automatically better for learning.

Suspension can absorb some of your input, particularly if you preload the fork aggressively or practice on rough ground. That doesn’t mean you need to alter compression or rebound settings immediately. First learn the movement on a predictable surface. If the bike consistently dives, rebounds abruptly, or feels difficult to control, check that the suspension is correctly adjusted for your weight and that the controls are functioning normally.

Terrain changes the decision as well. A dry, rounded root is different from a wet, angled rock. Loose soil can cause the rear tire to drift when you shift forward, while a steep approach changes how much room you have to brake. On a real trail, you don’t need to lift both wheels over every feature. Sometimes the safest option is to slow down, roll over it, choose a different line, or stop and inspect it.

Reassess the real trail feature: Before using the lift outside practice, check the obstacle’s height, angle, surface, and landing. Wet roots, loose rocks, blind approaches, and crowded trail sections deserve a slower line or a ride-around rather than a forced technique.

Make progress measurable

Use a simple progression: first lift the front wheel over a line, then lighten the rear wheel over the same line, then clear a very low object. Repeat each stage in both directions if the practice area allows it. Keep the obstacle centered at first; later, work on approaching slightly off-center so you can learn how steering affects the lift without adding a large jump.

A successful repetition should leave you able to continue riding normally. That means no hard landing, no sudden swerve, and no panic braking. When those conditions are consistent, raise the challenge by only one variable: a slightly higher object, a different surface, or a modestly slower approach. Changing height, speed, and terrain all at once makes it difficult to understand what went wrong.

The finished skill isn't measured by how high the bike can fly. It’s the ability to recognize a manageable obstacle, choose a suitable speed and line, lift the wheels with controlled movements, and remain composed if the attempt isn’t perfect. Keep the practice low and repeatable, and the coordinated lift will become a useful option rather than a risky reflex.
