Prepare a clean workspace

Work somewhere dry and reasonably clean, with enough room to support the bike without leaning on the brake rotor. A repair stand is convenient, but you can also turn the bike upside down if the controls, dropper post, and cockpit are safe in that position. Take care not to put pressure on delicate levers, hoses, or accessories.

Gather the replacement pads, the correct retaining pin or bolt if the old hardware is worn, a clean lint-free cloth, and a brake-safe cleaning fluid. Isopropyl alcohol is commonly used for cleaning brake rotors, provided it’s suitable for the rotor and finish. You’ll also need a clean plastic tire lever or the pad-spreading tool specified by the brake manufacturer. Avoid using a screwdriver with a sharp or contaminated tip, since it can damage seals or transfer grime into the caliper.

Before opening the packaging, wash your hands or put on clean nitrile gloves. Keep chain lubricant, assembly grease, suspension oil, and general-purpose degreaser away from the work area. New pads should remain in their packaging until you’re ready to install them. Set them down only on a clean, dry surface, with the friction material facing upward.

Confirm your brake’s details: Before removing anything, check the brake maker’s instructions for the correct pad shape, pad compound, retaining hardware, piston-reset method, and torque values. Similar-looking pads and calipers aren’t necessarily interchangeable.

Remove the wheel and old pads

Removing the wheel gives you better access and prevents you from dragging the rotor through a dirty caliper. Shift the drivetrain to a position that makes wheel removal easy, then release the axle according to its design. Don’t pull the brake lever while the rotor is out of the caliper. Without the rotor acting as a spacer, the pistons can move too far inward and make reinstalling the wheel difficult.

If your brake has a pad spacer, insert it after removing the wheel whenever practical. A proper spacer is cleaner and safer than improvising with cardboard or a random piece of plastic. If the pistons have already moved inward, you may need to reset them before the wheel can be installed again.

Locate the pad-retaining pin, bolt, or clip. Some systems use a threaded pin, while others use a bolt, circlip, or a combination of hardware. Remove the retaining hardware without letting it fall into dirt. Note how the spring clip sits and which way the old pads face. A quick photograph can help, although the caliper manufacturer’s diagram should take priority if the photograph is unclear.

Pull the pads and spring out as a pair when possible. Avoid touching the friction material. If the old pads are unevenly worn, glazed, cracked, crumbling, or contaminated, inspect the caliper and rotor rather than assuming the replacement alone will solve the problem. Uneven wear can indicate a sticking piston, a misaligned caliper, or a bent rotor.

Clean the rotor without contaminating the new pads

The rotor is one of the main routes by which contamination reaches new pads. Spray brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol onto a clean cloth rather than flooding the caliper. Wipe both sides of the rotor, turning the wheel as needed, and use a fresh section of cloth until it comes away clean. Don’t grab the braking track with bare, oily fingers afterward.

A rotor that has only fingerprints or ordinary trail dirt can often be cleaned effectively. A rotor exposed to chain lube, grease, or suspension oil is more difficult. Cleaning may remove surface residue, but a heavily contaminated rotor can continue transferring material to new pads. Follow the rotor and brake manufacturer’s advice; in some cases, replacement is the more dependable repair. Avoid applying household cleaners, silicone sprays, penetrating oil, or unknown solvents.

Don’t clean the rotor immediately above exposed replacement pads. Even a small amount of overspray or a dirty drip can spoil them. Keep the pads sealed and out of the way until the rotor is dry and the caliper work is complete.

Reset the pistons carefully

New pads are thicker than worn pads, so the pistons must usually be pushed back into the caliper. First inspect the visible piston area. If you can see heavy dirt around the pistons, clean it according to the brake manufacturer’s procedure before pushing them inward. Forcing a dirty piston back can push contamination past the seal or make the piston stick.

Use a clean plastic tire lever or the specified piston tool, and apply pressure gradually and evenly. Work through the pad slot, not against the brake rotor. If the system uses two pistons, try to keep the force centered so one piston doesn’t move dramatically farther than the other. Never use a sharp metal tool on the piston faces or seals.

If the pistons refuse to retract, stop rather than forcing them. The reservoir may be overfilled, the system may have a mechanical problem, or the pistons may need service. Removing fluid or opening the hydraulic system isn't a routine part of pad replacement and can introduce air or create a leak. A resistant piston is a troubleshooting problem, not a reason to add more leverage.

Once the pistons are reset, inspect the caliper opening for loose dirt or fluid. Wipe only areas that need cleaning, using a suitable lint-free cloth. Keep the lever untouched while the pads and wheel are out.

Install the pads without touching the friction material

Compare the new pads with the old ones before installation. Confirm the shape, backing plate, wear indicators, and any directional markings. Put the spring between the pads in the orientation shown by the manufacturer, then slide the assembly into the caliper. Some designs install one pad at a time, so follow the arrangement specific to your brake.

Hold the pads by their backing plates or edges. If you accidentally touch the friction material, don’t simply wipe it with a finger and continue. Clean contamination is difficult to judge by sight. Depending on the material and the substance involved, replacement may be the safest option.

Reinstall the retaining pin, bolt, clip, or washer in the correct order. Tighten threaded hardware to the manufacturer’s specified torque, using a torque wrench when a torque value is provided. Make sure the retaining hardware is fully secured and that it can't contact the rotor. Recheck that the pads can move as designed and that the spring hasn’t been trapped or folded incorrectly.

If the pad retaining pin has a clip, fit the clip completely. Small hardware that looks unimportant is what keeps the pads in position when the brake is working hard. This is a good place to slow down and compare the assembled caliper with the manufacturer’s diagram.

Reinstall the wheel and check alignment

Clean and dry the rotor once more if there has been any opportunity for contact or dust since the first cleaning. Reinstall the wheel with the axle fully seated and secured. Check that the rotor passes between the pads without forcing it into place. If the wheel doesn't seat normally, remove it and find the cause rather than tightening the axle against resistance.

Squeeze the brake lever several times until the pads contact the rotor and the lever feels consistent. The lever may initially travel farther while the pistons move back toward the rotor. It shouldn't pull to the handlebar, feel spongy, or continue changing dramatically after several controlled pulls. If it does, don’t ride until the cause is understood.

Spin the wheel and listen for light, intermittent rotor rub. A small amount of noise can occur while the pads settle, but persistent rubbing may indicate that the wheel isn't seated, the rotor is bent, or the caliper needs alignment. To align a post-mount or flat-mount caliper, use the procedure specified for that brake rather than loosening parts at random.

Inspect the area for hydraulic fluid. Fluid around the hose connection, lever, or caliper isn't normal pad dust and needs attention before riding. Also verify that the retaining hardware, axle, and any removed clips are secure.

Bed in the new pads

New pads and a cleaned or replaced rotor need a controlled bedding-in period. Bedding transfers a compatible layer of pad material to the rotor and helps the brake develop consistent power. It also lets you confirm that the installation works before you depend on it on a steep or technical trail.

Use a safe, open location away from traffic, pedestrians, and loose hazards. Begin with gentle braking and progressively use firmer applications as the brake responds. Avoid dragging the brake continuously for a long descent during the initial process; repeated controlled applications allow heat to build more predictably and reduce the chance of overheating one area.

The exact number of stops, speed range, and cooling intervals depend on the brake and pad manufacturer. Follow those instructions when available. As the pads bed in, braking should become more consistent, not suddenly weaker. Stop if you notice a severe burning smell, smoke, unusual vibration, fluid leakage, or a lever that changes feel.

Check performance before the trail: After bedding in, confirm that both wheels spin freely when the brakes are released, the levers feel firm and repeatable, and the bike stops smoothly from moderate speed. If braking remains weak, noisy, or inconsistent, diagnose it before riding technical terrain.

Mistakes that commonly cause contamination

The most frequent mistake is treating brake parts like ordinary bike components. Chain degreaser, penetrating spray, assembly grease, and suspension products belong nowhere near pad friction surfaces. Even a clean-looking rag can carry enough residue to cause trouble, so use a dedicated cloth for rotors and brake work.

Another common error is installing the pads before cleaning the rotor. That makes it easy to contaminate the new pads while handling the wheel or spraying cleaner. Keep the pads sealed until the rotor is clean, dry, and unlikely to be touched.

Avoid sanding or washing pads as a default recovery method. Some contamination is deep in the friction material, and aggressive attempts to rescue a pad can leave its surface uneven or chemically altered. If a pad has been soaked with oil or grease, replacing it is usually more predictable than guessing whether it has been restored.

Finally, don’t confuse noise with contamination automatically. A bent rotor, loose hardware, pad movement, caliper misalignment, worn wheel bearings, or wet trail conditions can also create noise. Look for the pattern: contamination often brings reduced power and a persistent squeal, while alignment or mechanical issues may produce rubbing, pulsing, or uneven pad wear.

Finish with a simple inspection

Once the brake has been bedded in, inspect the pad edges, rotor surface, and caliper for anything loose or wet. Check that the pads are wearing evenly and that the retaining hardware remains secure. If the new pads are already being pushed unevenly or one side is much closer to the rotor, investigate piston movement and caliper alignment.

The best way to avoid contaminated pads is to make cleanliness part of the sequence: clean hands and tools, wheel out before spraying, rotor clean before pad installation, and pads handled only by their backing plates. Reset the pistons with controlled force, reinstall every piece of hardware correctly, then bed the brake in somewhere safe.
