How to Ride a Steep Chute When You Can't See the Exit

Inspect the chute before you ride it
If you can’t see the exit from the top, look for another viewpoint. Walk or ride around the feature if the terrain allows it, and inspect the section from the side or below. You’re trying to answer a few practical questions: Where does the chute point? Is the exit a straight continuation, a turn, a compression, or a change in surface? Is there a usable runout, or does the feature lead directly into another hazard?
Pay particular attention to what you can’t see from above. A hidden exit might contain a loose patch, a rock step, a rut, a fallen branch, or a trail user coming uphill. It might also be less dramatic than the entrance, with the trail simply flattening after the steepest section. You shouldn’t assume either outcome.
Look for the widest reasonable line rather than the most obvious dark groove. Deep ruts can pull your front wheel into a direction you didn’t choose, while a patch of smooth-looking dirt may be slicker than the surrounding rock. If the feature is unfamiliar, conditions are changing, or you can’t establish a safe line from another angle, there’s no obligation to ride it blind.
Check the Hidden Exit
Before dropping in, confirm the trail is clear, the surface is within your current ability, and you know where you can slow, stop, or safely step off if the exit isn’t rideable. Local trail rules and conditions can change, so check current signs, closures, and guidance at the trailhead.
Set your speed before the steepest point
A common mistake is entering slowly and assuming you can create more control once the chute gets steep. In practice, the steepest section often gives you fewer braking options. Your weight shifts forward, the surface may become rougher, and the rear wheel can become light as you apply the brakes. If you wait until the middle of the chute to deal with speed, you may already be reacting rather than choosing.
Brake before the feature reaches its steepest pitch. Use both brakes smoothly, with enough pressure to reduce your speed without locking either wheel. The exact balance changes with the surface, gradient, tire grip, and your bike’s setup, so avoid treating a fixed front-to-rear ratio as a universal rule. The important part is to slow before you need maximum control, then release or ease the brakes as the terrain requires.
You don’t need to crawl. Extremely low speed can make the bike difficult to balance, especially on rough ground. Aim for the slowest speed at which you can still steer, absorb impacts, and make a deliberate correction. If you’re already tense and the bike is accelerating beyond that pace, don’t keep hoping the exit will solve the problem. Look for a safe escape or stop before the chute takes the decision away from you.
Use a position that leaves room to adjust
On a steep descent, move your hips rearward enough to keep the bike balanced, but don’t hang rigidly behind the saddle. A locked-out rearward position can unload the front tire, reduce steering control, and make the bike feel as though it wants to fold underneath you. Keep your arms and legs bent, your heels lowered as appropriate for the terrain, and your weight centered over the bike rather than committed to one extreme.

If the exit is hidden, look toward the section where you expect to make the next decision, then return your attention to the rocks, ruts, or edges that can affect the current bike length.
Hold the bars firmly enough to maintain direction without squeezing them into a fixed position. Your bike needs to move beneath you as the terrain changes. Let the suspension and your bent limbs absorb small impacts, while you maintain a quiet upper body and avoid sudden steering inputs. A chute usually rewards small corrections; dramatic ones often arrive too late.
Choose a line that preserves options
When the exit is hidden, the best line is rarely the one that points most directly at the steepest fall line. A slightly slower, wider line may give you more room to see around the feature, alter your direction, or stop before the trail changes. Avoid entering close to an edge unless you’ve confirmed that the edge provides a genuine escape rather than a drop, loose shoulder, or trap for your front wheel.
If the chute curves, set up for the turn before the steepest section if you can do so without crossing into an unsafe surface. Don’t cut toward the inside merely because it looks shorter. The inside may be tighter, rougher, or blind, and it can leave you with no room to correct if the exit is sharper than expected. Likewise, running wide may be appropriate on one feature and dangerous on another. The terrain beyond the visible trail matters more than a general cornering rule.
Keep the bike pointed where you intend to go. Avoid crossing a rut or rock diagonally at high speed unless you have a specific reason and enough control to do it. If the feature contains a distinct step, place the front wheel deliberately and let the bike roll through rather than pulling abruptly on the bars. When you can’t see what follows, preserve a line that allows you to straighten, brake, or dismount.
Reveal the exit without rushing toward it
Some riders try to solve a hidden exit by carrying extra speed. The idea is that momentum will get them through the unknown section before the bike becomes difficult to handle. That can work on a familiar, clean feature, but it’s a poor default when you haven’t verified the landing or runout. Speed reduces the time available to process new information and increases the consequences of a missed line.
Instead, enter with enough control to let the terrain reveal itself. As your view opens, identify the next usable section of trail and adjust your brakes and direction smoothly. If the exit turns, don’t wait until you’re fully at the bottom to begin preparing for it. Your current line and speed should leave you able to make that turn without grabbing a handful of brake or standing the bike up into the outside hazard.
If the exit is still unclear after you’ve entered, prioritize staying balanced over completing the feature. A controlled stop is preferable to a sudden change of direction. Depending on the terrain, you might be able to brake to a near stop, put a foot down on a stable surface, or guide the bike toward a known low-consequence side. Don’t deliberately steer toward an edge you haven’t inspected just because it appears to offer an escape.
Know when recovery has become the priority
A mistake in a chute often starts with a small loss of control: the rear wheel skitters, your eyes lock onto a rock, or your speed rises above the pace you can manage. The recovery move isn't to add several new inputs at once. Keep your weight balanced, look toward the safest available space, and use smooth braking while the tires still have a chance to grip.
If you can straighten the bike, do that before attempting a turn. If you can slow substantially, take the first stable opportunity to stop. Once you’re stopped, get off the riding line and assess the feature again rather than remounting automatically. A second attempt made from frustration usually carries less information and more tension than the first.
When the bike is no longer pointed where you want it, or when the surface is too steep or loose for a controlled stop, a deliberate dismount may be safer than trying to ride out every error. The exact technique depends on the terrain and your ability to separate yourself from the bike, so it’s better to practice emergency dismounts on forgiving ground than to improvise them at the edge of a chute. Avoid jumping blindly toward the unseen exit or downhill side; choose a stable, lower-consequence direction when one is available.
Walking is a valid line choice
Walk the feature if you can’t inspect the exit, can’t control your entry speed, or can’t identify a recovery option. The decision is especially straightforward when the chute is wet, icy, unusually loose, crowded, damaged, or beyond the limits of your current tires and skills. Conditions can turn a feature you’ve ridden before into a different problem, and familiarity doesn’t guarantee a safe outcome.
If you decide to walk, move yourself and the bike out of the active trail where possible. Use the safest route rather than trying to preserve the exact riding line, and be cautious about downhill-side slips. Once below the feature, look back at it and work out what information was missing. You may decide to return with a more experienced rider, practice a related skill elsewhere, or leave it for another day.
Walking also gives you useful data for the next attempt. You can examine where the surface changes, whether the exit opens gradually or abruptly, and where braking would be most effective. That information turns an intimidating blind section into a sequence of visible decisions—if the terrain and your ability make riding it appropriate.
Build the skill away from the blind feature
Practice steep terrain on features with a visible, forgiving runout. Work on braking before the pitch steepens, releasing pressure smoothly, keeping your weight balanced, and looking through changing terrain without freezing your arms. Add one variable at a time: steeper ground, looser surface, a tighter turn, or a less obvious line. Enter only when you can describe your intended speed, line, and fallback in simple terms. If that plan depends on the exit being exactly as you hope, it isn’t much of a plan.
