Handle common technical patterns

A small steering correction may create the traction needed for the following stroke. Avoid forcing a full pedal circle when the next rock is already waiting at the bottom of the rotation.
Wet or polished roots: Cross them as squarely as the line permits, and keep your power smooth as the tire contacts the root. Keep your weight balanced rather than making a large movement toward the handlebar each time the wheel slips. If the front wheel begins to wander, ease the power briefly and correct the line before adding another stroke.
A ledge or square step: Approach with enough momentum that you don’t have to create all the force at the obstacle. A short, deliberate pedal input before the rear wheel reaches the edge can help it climb. As the wheel contacts the step, keep your arms and legs supple. If the ledge is too high for the available traction or your clearance, ratcheting won’t replace a different line, a front-wheel lift, or a dismount.
Avoid the mistakes that make ratcheting harder
