You don’t need to plan for every imaginable failure, but you should know whether walking out is realistic and whether your tools match the bike you’re riding.
Familiar terrain is valuable here. On an unknown route, navigation mistakes add time at exactly the point when you have the least daylight. If you do choose unfamiliar trails, download the relevant map for offline use and keep your phone warm enough to function. Battery life can fall quickly in low temperatures, so don’t treat a phone as your only means of navigation or communication.
Match the route to your bike’s winter condition
